influence

I think I’ve spent to much time with people who are putting up an image. Today I was talking with someone who seemed a little awkward compared to the average person. But as I talked with him, I found him to be a very cool guy. Someone who has had major positive changes in their life, and who has the boldness to stand up for others.

Talking with him, there were many “uncomfortable” gaps in the conversation. Long pauses while we thought of something else to say. But these gaps shouldn’t really be uncomfortable. Why do we always need to be saying something clever, keeping the momentum of the conversation going? We don’t. It’s just an image we’ve been convinced of. Honestly, this slower, perhaps awkward pace is more natural for me. If I’d just accept it I’d probably be a lot less awkward in conversations. Isn’t that how friends talk? Just saying what comes to mind, and enjoying each others company in silence while they think?

It’s important to pay attention to who is influencing you, and who you’re molding yourself after. Trying to work with people who work to present an image, I’ve worked to act like them, and at some point become convinced their way is the better way.
