Idle Words

How do you enter into spiritual conversation with a person? The norm in this world seems to be to talk of things of little significance. People would rather spend hours discussing the locations of Dunkin Donuts in their home towns then 5 minutes on their hopes and dreams. They would rather make light of the world than understand it. Their fear that they will find them self hopeless if they take a deep look at them self outweighs the desire to find hope.

Yet if we are to witness to someone we must be able to engage them in deeper conversation. But how do we get there? If we jump to spiritual matters too quickly, they will avoid us just so they don’t have to search themselves. But if we stick to the lighter things they are used to (and we may be used to), we have no ground to draw them to something weightier.

As I can see it, we must earn their trust, and pray for the Spirit to move them to open their hearts.
